My Hero

June 21, 2010

My 17-year old stepson recently wrote this poem for Tim. We framed it and gave it to him for father's day today.

My Hero

To you Dad

My Hero is seven hundred miles away,

In a world where he wishes to stay.

He has another son and a daughter,

And to share his love is what made it harder.

Years and years ago we had a bond that couldn't be broken,

His heart was filled with me, and his words were soft-spoken.

Tragedy struck my family and we were separated down to the core.

A time when I cried every night for him, so our bond could be restored.

Growing up seeing him only a month of the year,

Hurt down inside me that laid my biggest fear.

That we would be ripped apart for good and never the same,

And what hurt the most, was thinking I was the one to blame.

Lost in my own world not knowing what to think,

Made me realize what you've done for me in less than a blink.

My father gave me the United States that was free,

He gave me an opportunity to be any man I wanted to be.

Put his life on the line in combat every day and night,

So that his baby boy could sleep without fright.

My Hero has given me the world every boy takes for granted,

My Hero has given me the seed of life which has been planted.

My Hero is my Father is Sgt. Tim Thaxton and I couldn't wish for more,

And by his actions, he has ended my world war.

Love Cary

That is so beautiful and heartfelt, and coming from a boy really says a lot. They tend to be more closed off with their feelings. Tim is a lucky dad!
