Our Beach Hula Party
June 30, 2011
I frequently admire other people’s photography skills and their Photoshop abilities. Self-taught at both, I still have a lot to learn. It doesn’t help that I’ve been relying on the abilities of my iPhone’s camera lately vs. lugging around my fancy point and shoot camera. However, my letter to Santa will again have DSLR first thing on the list. Actually, it will be the only thing on the list this year.
Same as last year.
While we were on vacation two weeks ago in the Outer Banks, the extremely talented Julie Dreelin took our family photos on the beach. Prior to having them taken she suggested a “theme” for this year’s shoot. Last year's photos were amazing and I wanted something a little different this year.
Tim suggested we dress like pirates.

After a lot of daydreaming on the commute to work, I had an idea.
Hula Hoops.
I’ve spent enough time on Julie’s website to know that no one has used hula hoops in any of her photos. Although she was very excited about the idea, I was a tad nervous that it would look cheesy.
It didn’t.*
The night the pictures were taken I had a dream about Julie. She and I were out on a long pier with a boathouse at the end. She told me to follow her back to shore and when we arrived she set a match to the water. A fire line went across the water and blew up the boathouse we had just been in. I think because I'm rarely in pictures I trusted her behind the camera and then she blew me away.
What do you think of the pictures?

I think they are awesome... and what a fabulous idea on your part to use the hula hoops.
I want to get one just for the exercise factor, plus I remember how much fun it was to hula hoop when I was a wee child a very long time ago.

I like the photos. I especially like the 2nd, 3rd, and last one. For some reason I like color more for beach shots unless it's stormy. (I am a huge fan of black and white in other situations though.) She did a good job and you guys all look great!
It looks like your little guy is the best hula-hooper in the family!
That second picture is so killer. Ditto the last one of Troy.
Awesome outta this world pics!
