The First Graduate
May 24, 2011
In the last week, we have traveled almost 1,500 miles and covered four states and two major life events for three people. It's our own version of four weddings and a funeral except there was only one wedding, no funeral and one graduation.
The first part had us driving to Kentucky to celebrate my stepson’s graduation from high school. First, we had a graduation party my father-in-law a.k.a. The Bob-Father’s farm with various family members including my parents who made the trip as well.
At one point the boys separated and headed down to the pond to fish while the girls went to ride horses.
We gifted Cary with a new laptop for college. We would have given him this even if he hadn’t of written a poem called My Hero for his dad and one for me called The Step-Monster.
Then we made a trip to my mother-in-law’s house to spend some time with her before the graduation ceremony.
Graduation was very nice and fast too with only 120 students in the graduation class.
Father and son, before graduation. It's been a long time since I took this picture of them.
I assume since Cary went to an all-boys high school, there wasn’t a lot of concern about caps being bobby pinned to stay in place.
I graduated from a small private high school and we didn’t wear caps and gowns. The girls wore long white dresses and carried a dozen red roses while the boys wore tuxedos. Every graduation class has their picture taken on the stairs of the large house on campus and it’s posted along the hallways in the school. This tradition still continues today.
Applause was held til the end of the presentation of diplomas.
Who brought this kid with the noise maker?
Oh yeah, me.

I went to one of these when one of my ex bf's son graduated from high school. Spent HOURS with both sides of the son's extended family. His mother, (my exes ex wife) and I had our hands full. But she and I loved hanging out together so it was fun.
The son still stays in touch with me and his dad and I broke up 12 years ago!! I miss his ex-wife!!
My family has always attended public schools so cap and gown is always the look of the day. Wish I had a decent photo of my graduation in '72. They're all so faded and orange looking... Hmmm, have to see what I can find in my archives.
What a proud day for your stepson! Onward and upward.

Congrats to the grad!!
You got a lot of good family pictures! I like the blue gown....mine was purple. We all looked like Barney.
