Flashback Friday (part 27) - The Baptism

August 7, 2009

Troy was baptized over Memorial Day weekend at the Catholic church in Bumpass, Va. in 2007.
Before the ceremony, Tim and I had to give Father some information for the official records.

Having been in Catholic school my entire life, I feel comfortable having conversations with priests and nuns. Tim, the non-Catholic, was maybe a little too comfortable because he doesn't experience anything remotely associated with Catholic Guilt.
Tim, Deb and Troy after his baptismHere is how the exchange went between the three of us as we held Troy in our arms and our family members were filing into the pews behind us.

Father: Debra, you were baptized Catholic?
Me: Yes, father as an infant, the paperwork was sent to your office last week.

Father: Timothy, were you baptized Catholic?
Tim: Nope.

Father: Son, were you baptized? If so, what religion?
Tim: (deep in thought) Well, I WAS baptized so......I guess I'm....Baptist!

(My mother is nearby doing the sign of the cross when she hears this.)

Father: Now Debra, can I have your mailing address?
Deb: Yes, we live at #### William Bradford Road in Virginia Beach*

Father: (after hearing the actual name of our road) Oh yes, William Bradford I believe he was a....
Tim: (interrupting)...A PIRATE!

Father: No, I believe he was a Pilgrim.
Tim: Oh......you're probably right.

(At this point, I Am doing the sign of the cross along with my mother.)

*We live in a neighborhood where all of the streets are named for famous people in creation of the United States so history buffs always get a kick out of it. Troy before baptismTroy gets baptized, we take the obligatory family pictures where someone is always looking at the wrong camera or has their eyes closed and go back to the lake house for brunch.
Family photo after baptismFather joins us and proceeds to indulge us with more history of the United States as he sipped on mimosas. Family photo after baptismThank God. Amen.

Oh man, I can't believe it. Troy was so tiny. He was so adorable, still is, but you know what I mean.

Catholic Guilt... oh that made me LOL. I grew up Catholic, but my family switched to a bible church. But catholic guilt still follows my mom closely!

Thanks for visiting me Saturday. For some reason your comment went to my spam folder... fixed it though!
